China Accepted 424,000 Invention Patent Applications in the First Half Year of 2015 with a 20.9% Yearly Increase

As known from the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO) recently, it accepted 1,124,000 patent applications with a 20.5% year-on-year increase, including 424,000 invention patent applications, increasing 20.9% from the same period of the last year and amounting to 37.7% of the total accepted applications, 471,000 applications of patent for utility model patent with a 28.5% yearly increase, and 229,000 design patent applications with a 6.4% yearly increase.
 
It is known that among all the patent applications accepted by SIPO in the first half year of 2015, 361,000 applications were from China domestic applicants, increasing 24.6% from the same period of the last year and amounting to 85.1% of the total amount, and 63,000 applications were from overseas applicants, increasing 3.6% from the same period of the last year and amounting to 14.9% of the total amount. Among the domestic invention patent applications, 291,000 applicants were employee applications, amounting to 80.6% of the total amount; and 70,000 applications were non-employee applications, amounting to 19.4% of the total amount.

In addition, in the first half of 2015, China granted 749,000 patents with a 26.4% year-on-year increase, including 161,000 invention patents, 376,000 patents for utility models and 212,000 design patents, which increased 49.2%, 17.3% and 29.3% from the same period of the last year respectively. Among the granted invention patents, there were 117,000 domestic patents, increasing 52.7% from the same period of the last year and amounting to 72.7% of the total amount, and 44,000 foreign patents, increasing 40.7% from the same period of the last year and amounting to 27.3% of the total amount. Among the domestic granted invention patents, there were 106,000 employee invention patents, amounting to 90.6% of the total amount, and 11,000 non-employee invention patents, amounting to 9.4% of the total amount.
  
According to the introduction of relevant leaders of SIPO, Chinese patent application and grant in the first half year of 2015 have the following three features: firstly, the patent application had a rather rapid yearly increase, where the increasing rate of invention patent application increased 10.1% from that of the same period of the last year, and the increasing rate of applications of patent for utility model ranked as the first among the three types of application; secondly, the grant of the three types of patent all had rapid increase, where the grant of invention patents increased most rapidly from the same period of the last year; lastly, the percentage of employee invention remained stable. It remained as more than 80% of the accepted domestic invention applications and reached 90% of the granted domestic invention patents.
