Welcome to Linda Liu & Partners on air! I’m Mavis. Today I would like to share with you the statistics of Chinese IP firms and agencies.
According to CNIPA, by the end of 2019, there were 66,000 agencies providing intellectual property services in China, including 2,691 patent agencies, 45,910 trademark agencies, 276 geographical indication trademark registration agencies, 365 integrated circuit layout design agencies and 1,103 notary offices providing IP related notarization services. In addition, over 7,000 law firms provided IP related legal services, more than 6,000 agencies provided IP information services and 3,000 agencies were specialized in IP monetization.
Linda Liu & Partners is one of 2,691 patent (also operating as trademark agency) agencies. Among these patent agencies, 510 have been operating for 10-19 years, and Linda Liu & Partners is 18 years old this year.
As of the end of 2019, around 820,000 people worked in IP industry. Statistics show that in 2019 the number of licensed patent attorneys was 20,192 and that of Linda Liu & Partners reached as high as 91.
By the end of 2019, among the employees of IP service organizations participating in the survey, the proportion of female employees was 54.8%, surpassing that of male, according to the survey.
36.8% of licensed patent attorneys had a postgraduate degree, and 636 had doctoral degree, accounting for 3.1%. As for Linda Liu & Partners, 74.4% of our licensed patent attorneys have a master's degree.
The top 100 patent agencies in terms of the number of patent applications in 2019-accounting for 3.8% of the total number of patent agencies, filed 35.8% of the total number of patent applications in 2019. The top 100 trademark agencies-accounting for less than 0.22% of the total number of trademark agencies, filed 34.7% of trademark applications in 2019.
In 2019, 1.184 million invention patents were filed through patent agencies, accounting for 84.5% of the total number of the filed invention patents in 2019; In 2019, Chinese patent agencies served 397,000 enterprise applicants, 16.0% increase from the previous year.
The commissioning rate of trademark applications was 91.7%; geographical indication trademark registration agencies filed 1,455 applications with the commissioning rate of 95.8%; 4,789 integrated circuit layout design applications were filed through agencies with the commissioning rate of 57.6%, 3.8% growth over the previous year.
Beijing, Guangdong province, Jiangsu province, Shanghai and Zhejiang province dominated in terms of the geographical distribution as they boasted more than 50% of the agencies. 20.9% of the agencies built its domestic branch office. Linda Liu & Partners is headquartered in Beijing and run branches in Shanghai, Suzhou of Jiangsu province, and Dalian of Liaoning province.
